Gonna Be Startin' Somethin'

I finally made my Amish friendship bread starter. It really only took a few minutes. I don't know why I put it off. Well, that's how I do sometimes, put off the easy stuff and do the hard stuff first. Weird.
Well, back to bread. This obviously was inspired by the book I blogged about called Friendship Bread. Basically, you make a sourdough starter, then you have instructions on things to do for 10 days. After those 10 days and task are over, you get to bake a yummy sweet bread and it makes 3 more starters that you pass along to friends and family.

Ok, here's what you need to get started:

Amish Friendship Bread Sourdough Starter
1 package yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk (I used almond milk)

Disolve yeast in warm water and let it sit for 10 minutes. Measure your dry ingredients and dump in bowl. Slowly add your milk and yeast. Cover loosely. This is day one of the 10 day cycle.
This is what mine looked like:

Liquidy and gross. Make sure you don't use metal anything when making this. Don't stir with metal whisk or put in a metal bowl.

Here is what you do over the next 10 days:

Day 1: Do nothing.
Day 2: Mash the bag.
Day 3: Mash the bag.
Day 4: Mash the bag.
Day 5: Mash the bag.
Day 6: Add to the bag: 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk. Mash the bag.
Day 7: Mash the bag.
Day 8: Mash the bag.
Day 9: Mash the bag.
Day 10: Follow the directions below:

1.Pour the entire bag into a nonmetal bowl.
2.Add 1 1/2 cup flour, 1 1/2 cup sugar, 1 1/2 cup milk.
3.Measure out 4 separate batters of 1 cup each into 4 1-gallon Ziploc bags.
4.Keep one of the bags fr yourself, and give the other bags to 3 friends along with the recipe.

Then you make whatever recipe variation you like. You can check them out at http://www.friendshipbreadkitchen.com/amish-friendship-bread. Otherwise I'll be back in 10 days with a recipe (well, I'll probably blog about other things in those 10 days, but 10 days from now I'll make bread).

Hopefully it will look like this:
